Dual Diagnosis

Dual Diagnosis is a DHS recommended course for workers in the AOD and MH sectors. It includes orientation to the AOD and Mental Health Sector, Assessing the needs of clients with AOD and Metal Health issues with a focus on assessment tools, referrals, understanding of models of rehabilitation for consumers with AOD and mental health issues, networking with other services to support practices.

Pre-requisites
This course has been designed to cater for students with either a background in mental health or alcohol and other drugs work. Candidates must be employed by a clinical mental health service, a non-clinical Psychiatric Disability Rehabilitation and Support Service (PDRSS) or an AOD treatment service. Eligibility to take this course is also assessed on an individual basis.

Credit Recognition and Study Streams
This course has two streams, a MH stream and an AOD stream. Those with a MH background can complete the AOD stream; those with an AOD background can complete the MH stream. The course is nationally accredited and utilises nationally recognised competencies in the MH and AOD sectors. Those successfully completing the course will be awarded five competencies that can be credited towards a diploma in MH or AOD.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Candidates may apply for recognition of prior learning for one or more units. Please see the student handbook for more information. Please be aware that evidence submitted for RPL cannot be returned. Applicants are encouraged to keep copies of their whole portfolio.

Course Description
Topics include; assessment and screening processes for MH and AOD clients, Orientation to the MH and AOD Sector, and knowledge and skills used to identify and respond appropriately to dual diagnosis clients. Advanced practitioners can provide integrated assessment, treatment and recovery.

Assessment Strategies include:
Case scenarios & studies, short answer tests & essays, simulations, quizzes, referral & treatment planning exercises, interviews & scripted role plays.

Dual Diagnosis is comprised of the following units:

    Mental health
  • CHCMH401A - Work effectively in MH settings.
  • CHCMH504D - Provide a range of services to people with MH issues.
  • CHCCS504A - Provide services to clients with complex issues.
      • Alcohol and Other Drugs
    • CHCAOD402A - Work effectively in the AOD sector.
    • CHCAOD408A - Assess the needs of clients with AOD issues.



    • Expected study hours per week: 8-10
