Four Core Units in Alcohol and Other Drugs

The Four Core units in AOD are aimed at enhancing understanding and skills for candidates working with people who have AOD issues. The units represent the minimum qualification for those who already hold related qualifications. Examples include qualifications and/or work experience in Allied Health, and/or Community Services, such as Community Housing, Justice, Youth Work, Employment services and Education

This course equips the student upon completion with a nationally accredited Statement of Attainment which is will be recognised towards further studies in the Certificate IV or Diploma in AOD Work and/or other Health and Community Services training.

Pre-requisites
Candidates should be employed in the sector or have significant volunteering experience in the area of Health and Community Services. Candidates should also hold a qualification in Heath, Social or Behavioural sciences field.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Candidates may apply for recognition of prior learning for one or more units. Please see the student handbook for more information. Please be aware that evidence submitted for RPL cannot be returned. Applicants are encouraged to keep copies of their whole portfolio.

Course Description
These four core units are taken from the Certificate IV in AOD Work. Topics covered in the course include Orientation to the AOD Sector, History of the Harm Minimisation Policy in Australia, Drug identification & Pharmacology, Assessment tools & processes, Treatment planning & Referrals, Risk assessment & management and Working with clients who are substance affected.

Assessment Strategies include:
Case scenarios & studies, short answer tests & essays, simulations, quizzes, referral & treatment planning exercises, interviews & scripted role plays.

First Aid:
Participants are required to provide WRT with a copy of their current First Aid Certificate (Level 1 HLTFA301B Apply First Aid) or above.

The first aid component must be gained externally to WRT at the participants own cost.

Please note: participants are charged only for the units they undertake with WRT and therefore are not charged for First Aid in course fees.

A written case must be put forward to the Senior trainer for consideration, showing justification for not supplying a First Aid certificate.

  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Bandaging
  • Managing Toxic Substances
  • Managing Bleeding
  • Managing Broken bones
  • Managing Consciousness
  • Managing Choking and Knowledge of Coma Positions

The Four Core Units are comprised of the following:

  • CHCAOD2C - Orientation to AOD work.
  • CHCAOD8C - Assess the needs of clients who have AOD issues.
  • CHCAOD10A - Work with clients who have AOD issues.
  • CHCAOD6B - Work with Clients who are intoxicated.


  • Expected study hours per week:6-8
