Motivational Interviewing
DAY
1 - Introduction to motivational interviewing
Participants will gain an understanding of this communication style
which can be applied in a variety of settings.
Topics to be covered include:
- Spirit and principles of motivational interviewing
- Core skills in interviewing
- Experiential practice
- Tools to measure your ongoing skill development
This course is especially useful for rolling with resistance.
DAY
2 - Interviewing for change
This course is aimed at participants who want to enhance their
motivational interviewing skills.
Topics include:
- Supporting client motivation
- Eliciting change talk
- Supporting commitment to change
Participants will be supplied with Change Plan tools.

Amphetamine Type Stimulants (ATS) Interventions
DAY1 – Introduction to ATS
This course is aimed at any workers who have contact with ATS users. Participants will gain an understanding of:
- Pharmacology of Amphetamine Type Stimulants (ATS)
- Pattern and prevalence of ATS use
- Signs and symptoms of ATS use and toxicity
- Patterns of withdrawal
- ATS and mental health
DAY 2 – Working with ATS clients
This course is aimed at any workers who have contact with ATS users. Participants will gain an understanding of:
- Harm reduction strategies
- How to communicate with someone displaying ATS use symptoms
- Brief interventions
This course is designed for workers with clients who use ATS, who may not require or want more long term advanced interventions.

Introduction to Counselling Skills
DAY 1 – Introduction to interviewing
This course is designed for participants without previous counselling training or experience to gain skills which will assist them in working with clients or undertaking further training. Topics covered include:
- Establishing a counselling environment
- Setting boundaries
- Developing a counselling structured plan
- Introduction to core practice micro skills
Participants will have an opportunity to practice skills introduced in the course.
DAY 2 – Communication Styles
Participants will gain an understanding of different communication styles applicable to the counselling/interviewing environment with a focus on motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural therapy. Topics to be covered include:
- Introduction to motivational interviewing
- Introduction to cognitive behaviour therapy
- Integrating motivational interviewing with cognitive behaviour therapy
- Alternative communication styles
- Coping with stumbling blocks
This workshop will give participants an opportunity to practice and build upon core interviewing skills using variety of practice tools.

Youth Cannabis Training
Do you work with youth who may be affected by cannabis use? If so you may like to attend this one day workshop in Richmond, Victoria.
We have a one day training opportunity on contemporary Youth & Cannabis Use on Monday 31 May, 2010.
Course Information
The aim of this workshop is to provide information and strategies to those who work with young people to enhance their skills to deal with cannabis use and cannabis use disorder.
The workshop will be delivered by Dr John Howard, Senior Lecturer, National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre.
Training will seek to:
- Enhance participants' understanding of why young people do and do not use drugs
- Enhance participants' knowledge of cannabis itself
- Describe who uses cannabis
- Explore the effects of cannabis
- Explore the particular needs of young people who may use cannabis
- Explore motivational enhancement to assist those who wish to change their cannabis use
- Encourage good practice procedures from workers in the field
It is appropriate for those who may opportunistically intervene with young people who use cannabis such as youth workers, those who work in supported accommodation or youth refuges, etc.
This workshop consists of four 90 minute sessions:
- Why young people use cannabis and consequences of use,
- Characteristics of young people and their patterns of drug use,
- The change process and how to assist change,
- How to maintain change and revision.
